Here is a recap of our top five most memorable moments of 2023:

1. In May 2023, Ibu Suzy Hutomo agreed to serve on Kaleka’s Board of Trustees, joining Prof. Sulityowati Irianto and Pak Iman Santoso. Ibu Suzy Hutomo co-founded “The Body Shop Indonesia” and is the chairwoman of this iconic beauty brand in Indonesia.

   We look forward to many more energizing conversations on how to bring Indonesia’s bio-products to international markets. At a personal level, Kaleka’s staff are inspired by Ibu Suzy’s commitment to pursuing a green and sustainable lifestyle. She believes that “being mindful of the environment can be easy, fun, and effortless.”

2. In July 2023, Asosiasi Petani Lestari Kelapa Sawit (APLKS), Kotawaringin Barat, broke a record by getting its 2,227 members to obtain *Roundtable Sustainable Palm Oil* (RSPO) certification. This is, by far, the largest independent oil palm farmer group that has obtained certification under one group simultaneously. The average number of members in oil palm farmer groups certified under the RSPO is around 220 farmers.

   This achievement shows that the certification process was an inclusive one, wherein every farmer had complete access to the study material. We believe that such large-scale certification of independent oil palm farmers can help achieve economies of scale to lower costs and cover as many farmers as possible to make sustainability a norm.

3. In August 2023, the Fakfak district passed a district law to acknowledge the existence of indigenous people's rights. Previously, seven Petuanan (kingdoms) had mapped their territories, covering the entire district, and four Petuanan had agreed amongst themselves on the boundaries.

   The map of indigenous people’s territories is crucial for acknowledging their rights to their lands. The indigenous people have preserved forests for generations, extending beyond the conservation areas designated by the government.

4. In November 2023, Seruyan completed Stage One of the RSPO jurisdictional approach framework. This marks the culmination of many years of hard work by the stakeholders. Through the jurisdictional approach to certification, the RSPO principles and criteria are applied at a jurisdictional level rather than at a management unit level, such as farms, plantations, or mills.

   Seruyan, together with Sabah and Ecuador, is the pilot jurisdiction of RSPO JA, which aims to protect the environment and restore landscapes at an adequate level for maintaining and increasing species populations. The approach will also reduce certification costs by increasing the scale of certification and achieving cost effectiveness through the consolidation of resources, expertise, and efforts.

5. In December 2023, we celebrated the achievement of 38 farmer groups from 37 villages across Kalimantan and Papua becoming a part of our big family. The farmers collectively protected 19,986 ha of forests, restored 324 ha of degraded ecosystems, and managed 11,772 ha of their farm sustainably. 1. Pada Mei 2023, Ibu Suzy Hutomo berkenan untuk menjadi salah satu Dewan Pembina di Kaleka, disamping Profesor Sulistyowati Irianto dan Pak Iman Santoso. Ibu Suzy Hutomo adalah salah satu pendiri “The Body Shop Indonesia” dan Pimpinan brand kecantikan yang ikonik di Indonesia ini.

   Kami menantikan berbagai diskusi menarik kedepannya untuk mengusung produk-produk ramah lingkungan asal Indonesia ke pasar mancanegara. Pada level individu, komitmen Ibu Suzy untuk menjalankan gaya hidup organik dan berkelanjutan telah menginspirasi staf Kaleka. Beliau percaya bahwa “menjadi sadar terhadap lingkungan itu mudah, menyenangkan, dan tidak memerlukan banyak beban.”

2. Pada Juli 2023, Asosiasi Petani Lestari Kelapa Sawit (APLKS), Kotawaringin Barat, berhasil memecahkan rekor dengan membantu 2.227 anggotanya untuk memperoleh sertifikasi RSPO. Asosiasi ini menjadi kelompok dengan anggota petani kelapa sawit independen terbesar yang mendapatkan sertifikasi secara bersamaan dalam satu waktu. Pada umumnya, rata-rata jumlah anggota dalam kelompok petani kelapa sawit yang disertifikasi RSPO sekitar 220 petani.

   Pencapaian ini menunjukkan bahwa sertifikasi merupakan proses yang inklusif, dimana setiap petani telah memiliki akses ke materi untuk belajar. Kami percaya bahwa sertifikasi petani kelapa sawit dalam skala besar seperti ini dapat membantu perekonomian untuk menekan biaya produksi dengan melibatkan sebanyak-banyaknya petani dan menjadikan keberlanjutan sebagai sebuah norma.

3. Pada Agustus 2023, Kabupaten Fakfak melaksanakan penatapan wilayah untuk mengakui keberadaan hak-hak masyarakat adat. Sebelumnya, tujuh Petuanan telah memetakan batas wilayah mereka yang meliputi keseluruhan kabupaten, dimana empat Petuanan telah menyetujui batas-batas tersebut satu sama lain.

   Peta yang memuat batas wilayah antar masyarakat adat tersebut penting sebagai bukti diakuinya hak dan tanah mereka. Masyarakat adat telah menjaga hutan dari generasi ke generasi, jauh melampaui area konservasi yang ditentukan pemerintah.

4. Pada November 2023, Seruyan mencapai Tahap Pertama dari kerangka kerja pendekatan yurisdiksi RSPO. Hal ini menjadi penanda hasil kerja selama bertahun-tahun oleh para pemangku kebijakan. Melalui pendekatan yurisdiksi untuk memperoleh sertifikasi, prinsip dan kriteria RSPO diterapkan pada level yurisdiksi ketimbang pada level unit manajemen seperti perkebunan dan pabrik.

   Seruyan, bersama dengan Sabah dan Ekuador, adalah yurisdiksi percontohan pendekatan yurisdiksi RSPO, yang bertujuan untuk melindungi lingkungan dan memulihkan lanskap pada tingkat yang memadai untuk mempertahankan dan meningkatkan populasi spesies. Pendekatan ini juga akan mengurangi biaya sertifikasi dengan meningkatkan skala sertifikasi dan mencapai efektivitas biaya melalui konsolidasi sumber daya, keahlian, dan upaya.

5. Pada Desember 2023, kami merayakan pencapaian 38 kelompok tani dari 37 desa di Kalimantan dan Papua yang menjadi bagian dari keluarga besar kami. Para petani secara kolektif telah menjaga 19.987 ha hutan, merestorasi 324 ha ekosistem terdegradasi, dan mengelola total luas kebun 11.772 ha secara berkelanjutan.
